The universe works in magical ways. For me, the good news of achieving a degree in fashion design came at a bad time. The pandemic restricted opportunities in my chosen field but I could never have predicted that a little time and a serendipitous conversation could bring me to a career defining moment.
Costume had never really crossed my mind, even though I was a bit of a movie geek, but arriving at Warner Brothers film studios for my first day as a trainee Breakdown Artist on Wonka, it all made perfect sense.
That first day at the studios was awe-inspiring. An American city street to my left and an emporium of vintage automobiles to my right, I was certainly entering a world of pure imagination. I really had no idea of the sheer scale of a production like Wonka. In costume alone, so many talented people bring the designer's vision to life. From makers to artists, to illustrators, to fitters there are so many cogs that make the costume wheel turn. I learned the fundamentals of Breakdown, which involved bringing life to garments, making them look like they have been worn, whether on a sea voyage or part of a work uniform. Being immersed in such a creative environment was incredible. I was living the dream. I had my Golden ticket.
Dreams can come true
Two years on, I have worked on some incredible productions and am doing what I love. I recently took my Mum to a crew screening of Wonka, in London. Seeing my name up in the cinema lights with her by my side is a truly surreal moment that I will cherish. Wonka is the perfect film to see during the festive period with the ones you love the most.
Willy, like me, is a boy with a dream. With a bit of imagination and faith in the universe dreams come true.
